Overview

My Patchbay is a social platform created for musicians, initially centred around Florida's music scene but designed with a wider community in mind.

Rather than building another promotional website for a music brand, the project required something people could actually join and use.

The idea was to create a dedicated space for musicians to connect with one another, build a presence within the community and discover people beyond the usual mix of mainstream social networks, scattered group chats and disconnected local pages.

That meant approaching the project much more like a product than a traditional website.

The platform needed its own identity, user system and community experience while still feeling rooted in music rather than looking like a generic social-network template.

The Challenge

Musicians already have plenty of places to post online.

The problem is that most of those platforms were not designed specifically around musicians finding other musicians.

A local artist, band member, producer or other person within the scene can easily get lost among general social content, while more focused communities are often fragmented across different platforms.

My Patchbay needed to create a clearer home for that interaction.

The challenge was therefore not simply designing pages. It was creating a platform people could register for, return to and identify as a community of its own.

It also needed to work beyond a single Florida city or local scene. The concept had to feel specific enough to have personality while leaving room for the network to grow geographically.

The Solution

I developed My Patchbay as a custom web application built around membership and community rather than static content.

Users can create accounts and access the private platform through a dedicated registration and authentication system.

The wider experience was designed around making the platform feel like a music community first. Branding, interface decisions and terminology were approached with that audience in mind rather than borrowing the visual language of a generic corporate SaaS product.

That distinction mattered.

A social platform depends heavily on how the product feels to use. Navigation, account flows, member-facing interfaces and smaller interaction details all contribute to whether the site feels like somewhere people should return to rather than somewhere they simply visit once.

The architecture was also developed with growth in mind. Although Florida provides a strong starting community, the underlying concept is not restricted to a single location, allowing the platform to expand as more musicians and music communities join.

The Result

The finished project gives My Patchbay its own independent platform rather than relying entirely on existing social networks to create a music community.

It combines the visual identity and front-end experience of a creative music project with the functional requirements of a membership-based web application.

For me, the project is a good example of the difference between building a website and building a digital product.

The important question was not only how My Patchbay should look, but how musicians would enter the platform, understand it, interact with it and keep coming back.

That makes it a particularly useful example of my web-app work: taking an idea that could easily have remained a collection of pages and turning it into an actual platform people can join and use.
