Service Overview

Intro

WordPress is flexible enough to power everything from a straightforward small business website to a large publishing platform.

The problem is that a lot of WordPress websites end up looking like WordPress websites.

A theme gets installed, the demo content is replaced, a few colours are changed and the business is expected to fit whatever structure was already there.

I take the opposite approach.

I design WordPress websites around the business first — its services, customers, content and the actions visitors need to take — then use WordPress as the system behind it.

The result is a custom website that is easy to manage without feeling like a template.

WordPress where it actually makes sense

I do not use WordPress simply because it is familiar.

For many small businesses, professional services firms, publishers and content-heavy websites, it is a very practical choice.

It gives you a mature content management system, straightforward editing, a huge ecosystem of integrations and enough flexibility to grow without rebuilding the entire website every time something changes.

For projects that need something more application-like, I may recommend a different approach. The platform should fit the project rather than dictate it.

Custom design, not a recoloured theme

A WordPress website does not need to look like it came from a template marketplace.

The design can still be built specifically around your business.

That includes the page structure, navigation, typography, visual hierarchy, calls to action, mobile experience and the way individual services or products are presented.

Where an existing framework or component genuinely saves time without limiting the result, I am happy to use it.

The goal is not custom code for the sake of custom code. It is a website that feels deliberate rather than assembled.

What I can build with WordPress

  • Small business websites

  • Professional service websites

  • Local service and contractor websites

  • Content-heavy and editorial websites

  • Blogs and publications

  • Portfolio websites

  • Membership or gated-content websites

  • WooCommerce stores

  • Existing WordPress redesigns

  • Custom functionality and integrations

WordPress works particularly well when the people running the business need to continue updating pages, publishing content or managing products after launch.

Built so you can actually edit it

A CMS is not very useful if every simple update requires a developer.

I structure the backend around the content you actually need to manage.

That might mean editing service pages, adding team members, publishing articles, changing project galleries or updating products without touching the underlying design.

The aim is to give you control over the useful parts of the site without exposing so many options that it becomes easy to accidentally break the layout.

WordPress website design and SEO

SEO works better when it influences the structure of the website from the beginning.

I can build WordPress projects around clear service architecture, sensible URLs, internal linking, metadata, heading structure, schema where appropriate and the technical foundations needed for search engines to understand the site.

That is very different from installing an SEO plugin at the end and assuming the job is finished.

Plugins can help manage SEO. They cannot decide which pages should exist, what each page should target or how those pages should relate to one another.

Performance without a plugin pile-up

WordPress itself is not inherently slow.

Poor hosting, oversized assets, badly built themes and dozens of overlapping plugins usually cause more trouble.

I try to keep the setup intentional: use plugins where they solve a real problem, avoid unnecessary dependencies and pay attention to image handling, caching, fonts, scripts and the way pages are actually built.

That makes the site easier to maintain as well as faster for visitors.

WooCommerce when you need to sell online

WordPress can also work well as the foundation for an ecommerce website through WooCommerce.

That can be a good fit when you want more control over the store, content and hosting than a completely hosted platform provides.

For larger ecommerce projects, I treat the shop as an ecommerce project rather than simply adding products to a normal website.

Product organisation, filtering, checkout, mobile shopping and the way customers move through the store all need to be considered separately.

WordPress at a much larger scale

WordPress is not limited to five-page brochure websites.

I have also worked on large publishing environments such as HiFi PiG, involving thousands of existing articles and a very large media library.

Projects at that scale introduce completely different considerations around migration, database size, publishing workflows, advertising, performance and maintaining a large existing content archive.

Already have a WordPress website?

You may not need to start again.

If the underlying content or site has value but the design, structure or performance no longer works particularly well, I can redesign an existing WordPress website while preserving the parts worth keeping.

That may involve cleaning up the page structure, replacing an outdated theme, simplifying plugins, improving mobile usability or restructuring important pages around current business goals.

Hosting, maintenance and handover

A WordPress website also needs somewhere sensible to live and somebody to keep an eye on the technical side.

I can handle the initial hosting and deployment setup and make sure the site is handed over in a state that is practical to maintain.

You are not locked into an opaque proprietary website builder just because I built the site.

WordPress is widely supported, and the website remains something you can continue using even if your needs change later.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you design custom WordPress websites?+
Yes. I design the website around the business, its content and the user journey rather than simply installing a pre-made theme and replacing the demo content.+
Do you use WordPress themes?+
Sometimes a lightweight framework or theme can provide useful foundations, but I do not treat the theme demo as the design. The finished website should be shaped around your business rather than the defaults of whichever theme was installed.+
Can you redesign an existing WordPress website?+
Yes. If the existing site has useful content, rankings or functionality, I can redesign and restructure it without automatically throwing everything away and starting again.+
Can you build an ecommerce website with WordPress?+
Yes. I work with WooCommerce where WordPress is the right foundation for the store. Larger ecommerce projects are planned around products, categories, checkout and the wider buying journey rather than treating ecommerce as an add-on.+
Will I be able to edit the website myself?+
Yes. I can structure the WordPress backend so the parts you regularly need to update are straightforward to manage without giving you hundreds of unnecessary controls.+
Do you handle WordPress SEO?+
Yes. I can build SEO into the site structure, including page targeting, internal links, metadata, technical setup, schema where relevant and Search Console configuration.+
Is WordPress good for small businesses?+
It can be. WordPress is particularly useful for businesses that want control over their website, need to publish or update content regularly, and do not want to be tied permanently to a closed website builder.+
Can you build custom functionality in WordPress?+
Yes. Depending on the project, I can extend WordPress with custom functionality, integrations or purpose-built components rather than relying entirely on off-the-shelf plugins.+
