Overview
I designed Build Your World as an ecommerce concept for a niche 3D printed product store selling practical, customisable products for homes, desks, tech setups, hobbies, and everyday organisation.
Rather than leading with a standard product-grid-first homepage, I introduced the store through an interactive pixel-inspired world. Visitors can rotate the world, explore distinct zones, and select product hotspots linked to collections including Home & Living, Work & Office, Tech & Accessories, Storage & Organisation, Hobbies & DIY, and Custom Prints.
The interactive world provides the discovery layer, while the wider site retains familiar shopping features such as product pages, categories, cart functionality, custom request forms, and backend-managed inventory. I also planned the store around Medusa to support products, categories, variants, custom product fields, file uploads, and quote-style custom print requests.
The Challenge
Most ecommerce sites follow a familiar pattern of a hero section, category cards, product grids, and checkout. For Build Your World, I needed to create a more distinctive entry point without losing the practical structure required for a scalable store.
The brand needed to show the creative possibilities of 3D printing without feeling like a fantasy game, toy shop, or overly technical maker platform. The experience also needed to keep a broad, lifestyle-focused product range easy to understand, including products that could sit across more than one category.
Creating an interactive homepage that feels playful while remaining commercial
Supporting custom products with variations, notes, dimensions, and uploaded files
Planning for STL, OBJ, STEP, image, sketch, and reference-document uploads
Keeping the frontend usable while backend data remained placeholder-based
Avoiding a WebGL-heavy experience that could affect mobile usability or conversions
The Solution
I separated the experience into two connected layers: an interactive discovery layer and a practical ecommerce layer. The homepage concept uses a rotatable voxel world built with React Three Fiber and Three.js, with each zone representing a product category or collection.
Clickable hotspots reveal product previews in standard HTML panels outside the 3D canvas. This approach keeps the interactive feature easier to update, more accessible, and better suited to SEO, while allowing the rest of the store to follow familiar ecommerce patterns.
I planned the ecommerce structure around Medusa for flexible product management, categories, variants, cart, checkout, and orders. Products can belong to multiple categories, so an item such as a desk organiser can appear under both Work & Office and Storage & Organisation.
For custom 3D printed products, I designed support for product metadata and custom line-item data, including custom text, dimensions, material preferences, colour choices, uploaded files, and reference images. I also designed a dedicated Builders page as a guided request flow covering product type, size, material, colour, file upload, description, and review steps.
An AI Concept Studio feature was planned to let users upload an image or sketch and generate an “Imagine as a Print” concept preview. For another custom-coded ecommerce approach, see the Edges in Motion case study.
The Result
The project provides a clear foundation for a distinctive, brandable 3D printed product store with a memorable interactive homepage, flexible categories, custom-order support, and a backend structure prepared for real product management. The live site brings together a creative way to discover products with the familiar functionality customers expect when browsing and ordering online.
I created room for future development including live Medusa product and category management, variants for size, material, finish, and colour, custom fields attached to cart and order data, file-upload review, quote workflows, AI-generated concept previews, and rotatable product views.
Rather than relying on a standard ecommerce template, Build Your World gives the brand a stronger direction: a store where users can browse, customise, imagine, and build their own world. You can also see the Electus Collective case study.
